At home DIY SPROUT your own seeds instructions:
1. If you have never sprouted seeds before the easiest seeds to start with are alfalfa/sunflower seeds/lentils!
2. Purchase seeds that are certified organic. You can buy special jars specifically designed for sprouting but the easiest to start with is a simple glass jar.
3. Put 2-3 level tablespoons of seeds in each jar to start. Once you get going you can do a jar each day if you which so that you always have fresh sprouts available.
4. Check all seeds and remove any that look damaged.
5. Place seeds into the jar and cover with filtered water.
6. Cut a small piece of muslin/gauze/tulle fabric and place on top with a rubber band around (We used an old washbag cut up into squares).
7. Leave jars overnight in a semi-dark place – a pantry cupboard is good!
8. Small seeds will need to be soaked for less time before rinsing – say 4 hours whereas larger seeds will need at least 10 hours so you can just rinse them out sometime the next day.
9. To rinse leave the muslin top on the jar and carefully empty out the water. Do this several times.
10. Refill the jar with clean filtered water through the muslin. Leave a tiny amount of water in the bottom of the jar.
11. Rinse the seeds at least twice a day – morning and night! Check that the seeds do not dry out and add a tiny bit more water if they do. Gently remove any seed husks you see from the tiny sprouts.
12. In 2-6 days the sprouts will develop tiny leaves on the shoots then they can be eaten.
13. Store them in the fridge and eat them as soon as possible!!
