Kate Hudson’s Flexitarian Lifestyle And How She Stays Positive! ‘Pretty Happy’ Book Review

“Taking care of yourself is the single most important connection you can make in your life. When you feel calm and in sync with yourself, when you feel satiated and neither hungry nor full, when you feel energised by whatever form of exercise puts a smile on your face – that’s when you know you’ve hit the jackpot.” – Kate Hudson (Pretty Happy)

Each month at Everyday Young we aim to profile an inspirational woman who we think is doing a pretty good job at loving herself and taking care of herself! We are all unique and different and we all need to figure out what works for us individually in terms of diet, exercise, our mindset and how we think. By showing you what other different women are doing we hope it inspires you with some new ideas of things that you can incorporate into your life and wellness routine!!

This month our inspirational woman is Kate Hudson. Kate is an award-winning actress, earth mama to two gorgeous boys and a fitness and wellness advocate with her own activewear clothing brand Fabletics! Kate also recently released the book ‘Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body’. We thought we would bring you her best tips from the book plus talk about how she looks after herself and her body to always stay ‘pretty happy’ herself! Let’s do a rundown of Kate’s diet, exercise and mindset!

DIET:
Kate is a big fan of Ayurvedic teachings. She outlines the three dosha types – Vata, Pitta and Kapha and refers to them frequently throughout her book. By knowing her dosha type she can recognise any signs of being out of balance and work with her diet, exercise and mindset to bring herself back into balance.

Kate does not adhere to any strict diet or limit herself of any foods she instead focuses on making sure that the majority of her diet is fresh fruit and vegetables! She also aims to eat little to no processed food from packets and instead fills up on whole grains and legumes. She only very occasionally eats meat as she prefers to keep her diet as alkaline as possible! She aims for a balance of 80% alkaline foods. She discusses how when our body is too acidic important minerals can be pulled from our bones, teeth and organs. Kate also largely avoids gluten, dairy and refined sugar. If she feels that she has overindulged in too many acidic or processed foods she will generally do a cleanse for a few days or weekend to reset her body.

Kate is also a big believer in taking probiotics for your digestive health and she outlines all of the different strains of probiotics and how they can work to help our bodies. Kate does a big bulk shop and food prep most Sundays (We are planning a food prep article soon and will be sure to include some of her ideas!). Kate is also strict about avoiding toxins in plastics and instead tries to use glass containers for all of her bulk food prep.

“The cleaner and more whole the food we eat is, the more our bodies work smart. On the other hand, the more we eat processed foods or foods that have an acidic effect on our digestive system and other organs, the more muddy our signals become.” – Kate Hudson (Pretty Happy)

EXERCISE:
Kate is really athletic and has been active from a young age, she has always loved to exercise and be in motion. She doesn’t adhere to a strict workout regime, but she aims for some good quality exercise at least four days per week. She likes to workout in her home and outside rather than go to the gym. She will often go for hikes and walks near where she lives. She talks a lot about how being outside is really important for our mood and our feeling of connection to nature and everything around us. She loves to do some gentle yoga and pilates and often for more cardio, she will do dance style workouts like Tracey Anderson and pole fitness.

“Being outside will not only connect us to the power of nature but also to ourselves. When we are outside, we are activated – our minds, brains and our bodies.” – Kate Hudson (Pretty Happy)

MINDSET:
Kate is a big fan of meditation and positive thinking. She tries to meditate on the daily and aims to recognise when she is engaging in any negative thinking patterns. She also will often take a day off to relax and ‘switch-off’ from everything. Switching off allows Kate to replenish her soul and bring in new creative energy!

A big message from Kate’s book is that we are always changing and our bodies are always going to be changing and we need to learn to love and accept ourselves through every life stage. She is very much a believer in putting your own needs and self-care at the top of your list so that you can be your best and give your best to everyone else around you.

“Our bodies do not stand still for time.” – Kate Hudson (Pretty Happy)

Kate also talks a lot about happiness – it is something that you discover and cultivate within yourself as you find your own joy! She recommends creating a ‘drawing board’ of thoughts and ideas so that you can create a deeper connection to yourself and your body. She has many worksheets and questionnaires throughout her book to help you gain a deeper mind-body connection. When we feel any sense of disconnection within ourselves we can then come back to our drawing board and work through it.

“A bigger, richer level of happiness comes when we connect with a larger purpose in our lives.” – Kate Hudson (Pretty Happy)
